“For the Word of God is living and active. It is sharper than any two-edge sword, piercing as far as the division of the soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12, NASB)
This passage of scripture tells us God’s Word is alive, active, and readily imparts truth into our daily lives.
I continually discipline myself to ask the Lord to help me become more present in the moment. Moreover, if I am truly honest… I am frequently consumed with memories of my past, fret over the future, and choose to not focus on today’s affairs. This behavior adversely impacts my relationship and intimacy with Christ.
His divine Word quickens us to choose rightly; however, we must know His Word in order to choose the better way! What about you? Like me, do you often live an unconscious existence – oblivious about what you eat, how you spend your money and time, or entertaining idle words of gossip?
What about the amount of time dedicated to reading scripture or sitting Sunday mornings listening to the pastor’s message? Are we present and open to the Holy Spirit’s illumination of what we read or are being taught through God’s Word? Or, like me, do you find your mind drifting to thoughts of where you will go for lunch or outstanding chores to be completed? Are you preoccupied about whether to wash your hair, easily distracted by the run in your nylons, or ponder what the dog may have eaten to become gassy last night?
Dear Lord, save us from our wandering minds and heed every precious moment we are in Your presence. Keep our minds open and hearts receptive to hear from You.
When my children were younger I used to tell them, “Be aware of your surroundings.” I warned them to be watchful of any car circling the block more than once, or any stranger who lingered too closely. I admonished them to respond tenderly to those who may be hurting and mindful of ways to help others. My desire for my children is that they are present and attentive each moment.
We can all benefit from these same warnings today. Do we want more intimacy with the Lord? Are we thankful His Spirit can reveal our genuine thoughts and intent? On the other hand, we can opt to remain blind to our sinful nature and deceptive thoughts. This is why the Lord gives us grace to access and know His truth.
Think of a fluorescent light used by forensic scientists to illuminate hidden evidence which the naked eye cannot see. Lord, we need Your ultraviolet beam!
