From the Headlines to the Prayer Closet

Precious, beloved Brothers and Sisters-in-Christ, have you seen the headlines lately? What was your reaction to Charlie Sheen’s latest antics and interviews? What about Lindsay Lohan’s? They have the curse or blessing of being famous, and therefore, we have the curse or blessing of hearing about their sad behavior. Let’s make it a blessing by taking them before our Lord in prayer and asking for His intervention on their behalf. As believers who walk in Christ’s grace, I believe that one of our responsibilities is to be alert to those who don’t know Him and pray that they yield to the Holy Spirit’s leading so they can come to know Him.

What did you do when you heard that the actor Michael Douglas had cancer? Have you prayed for him, for his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, for their families, for the doctors who are caring for him?

How do you feel about Obama Healthcare? Have you prayed about it? Have you prayed for President Obama and his councils and staff? For your legislators? About our country’s deficit? About the situation in Madison, Wisconsin with the labor unions and Wisconsin’s governor?

When we see something in the news headlines that stirs a reaction in us, whether good or bad, we have a reason and a responsibility to take that to prayer. You know the Scripture: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6 NIV).There are lots of hurting people out there, people who are searching everywhere for peace, for love, for satisfaction, for happiness, for a new thrill to top the last one, for a purpose to live. We know the only One who can give peace and who knows the reason for life—every life. Let’s pray that these lost people find Him. Let’s pray that He steps into their lives, draws them to Him, and blesses them with His saving grace. The next time we are prone to “tsk, tsk, tsk” at someone’s antics, let’s pray for them instead. When we witness a troublesome event, let’s pray for those involved and for God’s intervention.

Cheryl Lynn knows she is one of the Lord’s works-in-progress, serving Him as an ambassador for Christ in the roles of: wife, mother, writer, speaker, teacher, and business woman whenever and wherever He calls her. Her mission is to help equip fellow believers in Christ to “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12-13 NIV). She and her husband live in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky. They have two adult children.
